When applying for the CNA training program at Lynden Healthcare Education, you will be asked “Why do you want to be a CNA?” We have asked many people that question over the years and have found that there are a variety of reasons they choose to become a nursing assistant. Below is a summarized version of what they said.

Passion for helping others. Many CNAs are driven by a deep-seated desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They find fulfillment in providing care and support to individuals who are in need, including the elderly and disabled or those recovering from illness or surgery.

Opportunities for meaningful work. People enroll in LHE’s CNA training program so they can do work that directly impacts the well-being of patients and residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They assist with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, feeding and mobility, fostering a sense of purpose in their work.

Job stability and demand. The demand for CNAs remains high due to an aging population and the need for long-term care services in Whatcom County. People choose to become a CNA for job stability and opportunities for employment, especially in the long-term care industry.

Personal fulfillment. CNAs often derive personal satisfaction from building relationships with patients and residents, providing emotional support and witnessing their recovery and/or being there for people during the end-of-life transition. People choose to work at a nursing assistant in the long-term care industry because they get a sense of fulfillment that comes from making a positive impact on someone’s life. The work can be hard, but also incredibly rewarding.

Shift flexibility. Some people choose to become a CNA because of the flexibility that comes with the job. They have the ability to choose different shifts—days, evenings or nights—based on their preferences and scheduling needs.

Entry into the healthcare field. Becoming a CNA can be a steppingstone for individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. It offers valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the healthcare environment, which can help people decide if they want to continue their education or training in nursing or other healthcare professions. When you’re planning your future, think about becoming a certified nursing assistant in the long-term care industry in Whatcom County. Overall, people choose to become CNAs because it allows them to combine their compassion for others with a practical skill set, providing them with a rewarding and fulfilling career in the healthcare industry.
