Becoming a certified nursing assistant in Whatcom County is a rewarding path that allows you to make a real difference in people’s lives and offers significant personal and professional growth. As you embark on this “new year, new you” journey, consider the fulfilling nature of a career caring for the elderly and medically fragile individuals.
Becoming a CNA in the long-term care industry can provide you with valuable skills, a stable career and the deep satisfaction that comes from knowing you are making a positive impact in our community. Here’s a breakdown of how to achieve this worthwhile goal.
Understand the requirements for Lynden Healthcare Education’s CNA training program:
- Applicants aged 16 or 17 may participate if they have a GED or are enrolled in a Running Start program during the school year.
- Applicants aged 18 or older are preferred to have a high school diploma or GED.
- Provide proof of a negative TB skin test taken within the past 6 months. LHE can administer this for you as part of the enrollment process.
- Background checks are required for all CNA trainees per Washington state law. Enrolled students get this check provided at no additional cost.
Complete the training program.
- Classroom instruction: You’ll learn essential skills like basic nursing care, vital signs, infection control and patient communication.
- Clinical training: This hands-on experience in a long-term care setting allows you to practice your skills under supervision.
Pass the certification exam.
- Written and skills exam. You will need to achieve a passing score of 80% or higher to meet the standard. You can retake one test; if you fail two tests, you will be released from the class and will need to re-enroll in the training program at a future date.
Get listed on the state registry.
- Once you pass the exam, you’ll be listed on the Washington State Nurse Aide Registry. This is what officially certifies you as a CNA/NAC.
Becoming a long-term care CNA/NAC is a fulfilling career choice. With dedication and the right preparation, you can achieve your goal and start making a positive impact on the lives of others. Best of luck with your “new year, new you” journey!
