CNAs must have a genuine concern and empathy for the people they care for. They should show kindness and respect to patients who may be in pain, suffering or vulnerable. Compassion means being able to listen to patients’ needs and preferences, providing them with needed comfort and support and treating them with dignity.

Being a nursing assistant requires compassion, patience and strong interpersonal skills. It also involves physical stamina, as the role often involves assisting patients with mobility and daily activities. Additionally, a nursing assistant should be detail-oriented, organized and able to follow instructions accurately.

We get into this line of work because we love people and love helping ensure that their lives are as enjoyable as possible. So, sometimes work can take on a completely different form.

“Passing the certified nursing assistant test in Washington state is not easy,” says Dianne Anderson, the instructor for LHE’s training program. “It takes focus and determination.”

Ultimately, the goal of CNA training at Lynden Healthcare Education is to prepare students to work in the health care industry as certified nursing assistants. That means teaching basic medical skills, providing hands-on experience caring for people and preparing students for the required Washington state nursing assistant competency exam.
